Deonisha Thigpen, Psy.D.

Dr. Thigpen is a Licensed Psychologist in Maryland and California. She received her masters and doctorate degrees in Clinical Psychology from the California School of Professional Psychology at Alliant International University in San Francisco, California and she received her Bachelor of the Arts in Psychology at the University of California, at Berkeley.

 

Dr. Thigpen has almost 20 years of experience in both inpatient and outpatient settings. Her professional experience in the public sector includes conducting psychological evaluations along with providing treatment through individual, couples, group, and family therapy. Dr. Thigpen strives to facilitate a warm and supportive environment in which each of her clients may find their way comfortably into the therapeutic process in a manner that feels natural. Dr. Thigpen will initially focus on clients’ histories in order to understand the backdrop of their lives up until the point they decided to seek treatment, and then focus on the here and now as a way of identifying and managing current challenges that relate to personal growth and life fulfillment.

 

Dr. Thigpen’s eclectic and down-to-earth style allows for her to link with patients across age ranges as well as across cultural experiences. She conceptualizes cases from a cognitive behavioral framework while incorporating dialectical behavioral and solution focused therapy along with mindfulness techniques among other positive psychotherapy skills. Dr. Thigpen specializes in psychological treatment for depression, anxiety, psychological trauma and abuse in children, adolescents, and adults, as well as problems within varying relationships. She assists patients identify their specific patterns of maladaptive behaviors and learn effective coping skills to better deal with life stressors. Her approach to therapy begins with a customized psychological assessment to establish specific treatment planning options as well as to determine each client’s readiness for treatment and positive change. She then encourages healthy habits through collaborative goal setting and ongoing solution focused interviewing. Providing psychoeducation is another component of Dr. Thigpen’s treatment; wherein she provides information and support to better understand and cope with mental health challenges. Dr. Thigpen handles each client with care, grace and aplomb. With a broad range of personal and professional experiences she is equipped to help you identify areas of your life that need improvement and strive toward pure positive change.
