Emily Stano, Psy.D.

Dr. Emily Stano is a licensed psychologist in the state of Maryland. She provides individual, family, and group therapy services to children and teens as well as psychological assessment services to patients of all ages. Her specialties include working with children and teens experiencing anxiety, depression, ADHD, challenging relationships, identity issues, and chronic health conditions. She works with families to navigate parenting concerns, stressful relationships, and significant life changes. 

 

In therapy, Dr. Stano uses techniques from several evidence-based treatment modalities, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Functional Family Therapy (FFT), and Interpersonal Therapy (IPT). When working with younger patients, she also enjoys using creative and play therapy techniques. Her goal is to help people learn skills to better navigate their current struggles and to become more effective problem solvers in the future. 

 

Dr. Stano’s assessment services include general psychological assessment and presurgical psychological screening. Assessments provide diagnostic clarification and aid in treatment planning, as well as help to identify strengths and weaknesses related to intelligence, academic skills, emotional functioning, and social functioning. After completing an assessment, Dr. Stano provides a detailed report, including concise and applicable recommendations tailored to each patient’s individual needs. 

 

Dr. Stano earned her Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology from Spalding University in Louisville, KY. She completed a predoctoral internship at The Grand Valley State University Counseling Center in Allendale, MI and a postdoctoral fellowship at the Kennedy Krieger Institute/Johns Hopkins School of Medicine Child and Family Therapy Clinic in Columbia, MD. She has professional experience working in a variety of settings such as schools, community mental health clinics, hospitals, university counseling centers, and private practice. Dr. Stano is an identity-affirming clinician who works with and advocates for people of diverse backgrounds, including yet not limited to race, ethnicity, religion, culture, immigration status, ability, sexual orientation, and gender identity. 

 

Before pursuing her doctoral degree, Dr. Stano graduated from Churchill High School in Potomac, MD; therefore, she is familiar with the academic and social pressures experienced by young people in Montgomery County.
